One of the most popular questions in our forums is “What is the best free anti-virus?”. While many people rely on free tools for PC security, and it’s certainly possible to keep a machine clean with a range of free software, others don’t want the hassle and would rather pay for protection. In return for that yearly payment you usually get a complete suite of tools that work in the background checking every file and every mouse click in a browser to ensure you remain safe. But if you’re spending money you want to know which security suite is the best, and that’s where independent testing comes in.
AV-Comparatives is an independent security software testing company, and they regularly pit the most well-known and popular suites against each other. The results have just been announced for their 2010 product review, and the winner of the Product of the Year award is F-Secure Internet Security 2011.
In case you are wondering, Symantec won last year and Avira won the year before. F-Secure took the top spot this year because not only did the suite manage an Advanced+ rating (something only F-Secure and Avira could achieve this time round), but it also did not require any user input to achieve it. So it got the highest rating while remaining completely transparent to the user which is exactly what we all want.

Beside the On-Demand Detection Test it may be regarded as the most relevant single test. Consequently, we felt this was another good reason to give the Product of the Year award to F-Secure.

Although F-Secure came out on top there are a handful of security suites worth considering if you decide to pay for your protection. The AV-Comparative website is a good, independent place to start when looking at the options.
