Mumbai: As the Bombay High Court gave 15 days to Mumbai Police to submit another progress report on the murder of a senior crime reporter on June 11, national editors of major print and TV networks met the chief minister to express their concerns over the investigation.
The editors felt no criminal had been apprehended 10 days after Mid Day journalist J. Dey was murdered. Editors Shekhar Gupta of Indian Express, and N. Ram of The Hindu said it was important to keep up pressure on the government.
Ram said: "The situation in Maharashtra is worse than other states since all kinds of attacks take place with apparent immunity." Others who were part of the delegation included Arnab Goswami, Editor of Times Now, Girish Kuber, editor of Loksatta, Sachin Kalbag, editor of Mid Day, and others.
Unabated attacks
Whether the differences are political or ideological, whether it is intolerance of opinions or even creativity as was the case of author James Laine and the late artist M.F. Husain, or film-makers and artistes, the attacks have continued unabated.
Nikhil Waghle of IBN-Lokmat TV channel, who has himself been subjected to attacks from political goons, said: "All these attacks should be seen as part of a larger picture in this state."
According to him, almost 900 incidents of attacks on journalists have been reported in Maharashtra, a majority in rural areas, in the last 20 years.
"No assailant has been ever picked up by the police. This is the first time a journalist has been killed."
