In yet another case of drunk driving, an auto driver was killed and at least 10 people were injured as a speeding Porsche car rammed into parked autos after hitting a divider at Dr Radhakrishnan Salai in Chennai on Monday morning.

According to police reports, the car was being driven by a drunk student V Vikas, a resident of T Nagar, who was returning home with his friend after consuming alcohol at a party hosted by Tuti Patriots, who won the Tamil Nadu Premier League final on Sunday night.

Vikas is the son of Supreme Court lawyer Vijay Anand, while his friend Charan Kumar is said to be a former Indian cricketer’s brother. Both of them were under the influence of alcohol. However, they remained unharmed as the airbags deployed on time. The duo have been arrested under section 304 (IPC) culpable homicide not amounting to murder, 308 (attempt to culpable homicide), 109 (Punishment of abatement if the act abatted is committed in consequence), 114 (Abettor present when offence is committed).

Vikas had lost his control of the car and hit the divider. Then the car ploughed through autorickshaws parked on the roadside, injuring people who were sleeping in the autos.

Autodrivers Arumugam and Varadhan suffered serious injuries in the accident and were moved to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. Arumugam succumbed to his injury after his admission, while Varadhan’s condition is severely critical. The others who got injures underwent treatment at Royapettah Government Hospital.

The deceased auto driver, Arumugam, was from Agoor Village near Tiruttani and only recently he had lost his wife and elder daughter. Both were said to have committed suicide over family issues. Police said Arumugam is survived by his seven-year-old daughter who lives in Tiruttani.

The Adyar traffic police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.

The spot of the accident lies in close proximity to the house of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Often, youngsters with their luxury cars frequent this road and races, but not a single step has been taken to restrict them of overspeeding.
