A high-end car speeding at 120kmph with a drunk businessman at the wheel smashed into a motorcycle, killing the rider on the spot and causing a pile-up with a truck, on Anna Salai early on Thursday.
Police arrested the driver of the Audi Q-7 sedan, Mohammad Safiq, 31, and his friend Mohammad Farook, 39, both from Erode, 330km southwest of Chennai, who was also in the car when the accident took place. Investigators said both men were were drunk.
"We sent them to Government General Hospital and medical tests confirmed that they were under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place," a police officer said.
The accident took place at 3.40am on Thursday, when Safiq, steering into the wrong side of Anna Salai, divided for metro rail work, and ploughed into the motorcycle of I Kevin Raj, 25, a waiter at a star hotel in Guindy, who was heading to his house in Kasi Gardens, Kasimedu, after work.
The car's impact with the motorcycle flung Raj's body onto fencing for metro rail work near the Anna Salai-Binny Road junction.
When the Anna Square traffic police arrived at the spot they found Safiq and Farook trapped in the car. The emergency air bags had opened and saved their lives.
Policemen freed them from the wreck and sent Raj's body to Government General Hospital for autopsy. They arrested Safiq and Farook, both leather traders, who were in the city to attend a trade fair.
The Anna Square traffic police registered a case against the pair under IPC Section 304 (II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). A senior officer said Safiq was at the wheel of the sedan but police booked Farook on the same charge as both men were drunk and caused the accident.
A magistrate's court in the city remanded them in jail.
The car was travelling at more than 120kmph when it hit the motorcycle, the officer said. The driver of a Tata 909 light truck following the bike attempted to swerve to the right and avoid the stricken vehicles but ended up colliding with the car and the motorcycle.
The truck overturned but the driver, Satish Kumar, 31, of Kanyakumari, sustained only minor injuries. Police admitted him to a hospital.
