An 18-year-old girl committed suicide at her house in Delhi’s Kishangarh area on Tuesday, after she was allegedly molested by a group of youths from the neighbourhood.

The girl’s family had lodged an FIR against the group, which led to the arrest of 20-year-old boy. However, the Police found that the girl was in regular touch with him for the last one year.

A case of abetment to suicide was registered against him, reported DCP(south) Ishwar Singh.

The girl used to work in a beauty parlour along with her sister. Her sister told that the girl was being harassed by the boy for over a month. He had been asking her to meet, but she stayed quiet and refused to meet him.

On the 10th of May, she was returning from a customer’s house after providing beauty treatment when she was stopped along the way by accused and 5 of his friends. The street had people around it, no one did anything. The young woman said that the men pulled her away from the road into the forest where they hit her and abused her. She refused to tell her story further and kept crying, claiming he had been torturing her for days. Her face and neck were red with marks from slapping and nail scratches.

She took the house keys from Pooja and went home. Her mother upon speaking to Pooja left work immediately to come home. She arrived home at around 7:40 where she struggled to open the gate which was usually easy to open. Finally, she managed to enter the house and upon entering found that her daughter had hung herself from the fan.

The mother called the police which arrived 10-15 minutes later. The body has gone for post-mortem. Results are not out. The FIR has been registered at the Vasant Kunj police station. Accused has been arrested but his accomplices are absconding. The family states that little children from the neighbourhood saw the young woman being pulled into a forest where no one knows what happened. Sexual assault a possibility, but not confirmed.
