Woman dies after delivery, husband among 4 booked

The Rajasansi police under the Amritsar rural police have booked four persons, including a nurse, on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder after a woman died after delivering a child in the Rajasansi area on late Tuesday evening.
Among those booked include her husband Talbir Singh besides Dheer Singh and Darashan Kaur, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, respectively, and Satwant Kaur of Guru Ram Das Colony on the jail road.
The victim was identified as Manpreet Kaur (23), dauther of Rajwinder Singh of Saidpur village. Gurwant Kaur, mother of the victim, stated to the police that her daughter was married to Talbir Singh around two years ago and in April this year, he went to Australia. She alleged that since his departure to Australia, her in-laws started demanding Rs 10 lakh as dowry. She alleged that Talbir also started threatened her of separation. She alleged that Manpreet was pregnant and her in-laws got the delivery done from an unknown and inexperienced nurse at their home. She alleged that immediately after delivering a male child, Manpreet Kaur’s condition deteriorated and she died.
Lakhbir Singh, investigating officer, said the body of the deceased was handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination. He said the police was awaiting the autopsy report in order to ascertain the cause of death though a case under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 120-B, IPC, had been registered against the deceased’s husband and in-laws besides the nurse. He said the nurse used to run a private clinic at the basement of her home. He said the police would also investigate the legality of running of a maternity clinic from her residence.
