The busy railway station of Volgograd in Russia was rocked by an explosion detonated by a suicide bomber. Above 18 people were allegedly dead and around 50 were critically injured in the attack. The city which observed the bomb blast is located 400 miles northeast of Sochi in the North Caucasus Mountains. The Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi in February 2014. Now Russian government has set up an inquiry committee into this suspected act of terror as the suicide bomber blew her up in the station of Volgograd.
A new sanctuary to save World’s rarest Javan rhinos will be constructed by Indonesian Government. Abah Gede or the Great Father is the local term of Indonesia Javan rhinos. There are about 50 of the rhinos in existence.The new sanctuary will be constructed at the Ujung Kulon National Park which is UNESCO World Heritage Site and is situated on the western tip of Indonesia’s main island of Java.
A new law in China. Chinese Government has banned its officials from smoking in public places. The public places includes sports venues, college campuses, offices, hospitals, restaurants, public transports and schools or any other places where smoking is prohibited or where smoking is banned. Also, the Chinese government officials will not be allowed to use public funds to buy cigarettes. Not only this, tobacco products cannot be sold within Communist Party or in government office of China. It’s worth mentioning here that China is the World’s largest cigarette producer and consumer and India, Hong Kong and China within Asia have banned smoking in public places. Although from 2011, China’s health authorities has already banned people from smoking in public places but it was not implemented, enforced or obeyed strictly and seriously by the public. Also since 2008, India has banned smoking in public places including sports venues, college campuses, offices, hospitals, restaurants, public transports and schools.

PETROTECH-2014, International Petroleum Conference 2014 will be organised in New Delhi from 12 January and will end on 15 January. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Oil and Natural gas Corporation Ltd, PETROTECH will be held. It will offer world-class facilities to showcase the entire range of opportunities in the hydrocarbon industry at one place. This year PETROTECH theme will be- Vision 2030: Emerging Global Energy Basket – Challenges and Opportunities. The event is planned as a ‘Carbon Neutral’ event. The international conference will focus at tangible contributions to the issues of – Aligning Policy with the Emerging Energy Basket, Diversifying the Global Energy Basket, Creating Capacity to Service, Shaping an Equitable and Global partnerships for a Sustainable Energy Basket. The conference is a platform for national and international experts in the oil & gas industry to exchange ideas and share knowledge and experiences.

Devendra Kumar Pathak is the new appointed Special DG, Border Security Force (BSF). Pathak, an (Indian Police Service) IPS of 1989-batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadres, was serving as the Special DG, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during his appointment in BSF. Since 11 November 2011, he has been serving Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
A female judge, Ashraf Jehan was sworn in at Pakistan’s national sharia court which hears cases under the Islamic legislation. With this, Jehan has become the first female judge to be appointed in the Pakistan’s national sharia court’s history. Jehan was earlier serving as an additional judge at the Sindh High Court. As part of military dictator Ziaul Haq’s policy towards Islamisation of Pakistan’s institutions, the Pakistan’s national sharia court was established during his rule.

American professional tennis player Serena Jameka Williams has clinched the Female Athlete of the Year award of the year 2013. Currently ranked number one in women’s singles tennis player, Williams was awarded three times with this title. Meanwhile, American Basket ball player LeBron James has grabbed the Male Athlete of the Year award.
The Haryana Government granted eight acres of land to the two time medal winner wrestler in Olympics Sushil Kumar. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee Susheel will set up his academy at the Motilal Nehru School of Sports in Sonepat at this granted land. Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar has won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in the London Olympics 2012. He has also been awarded with the highest India’s sporting honour and Arjuna Award.
Corey Anderson, all-rounder cricketer of New Zealand has made a record by cracking the fastest century in one-day international (ODI) history. He made the world record by reaching three figures in just 36 deliveries against the West Indies. Prior to him, Pak cricketer Shahid Afridi has held this record within 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1996. New Zealand’s Anderson made unbeaten 131 while hitting 14 sixes, the third highest number of sixes in an ODI innings.
