The indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile was successfully test-fired by Indian Army. The surface-to-surface missile has a strike range of 350 kms and its capable of carrying warheads of upto 1000 kgs. The missile was test fired from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of the ITR at Chandipur, a test range in Odisha. The specially formed Strategic Forces Command (SFC) conducted the launch and had met all the parameters.
Jain community will now be included in list of minority community. It was disclosed by K Rahman Khan, Minority Affairs Minister. A proposal and a note have been sent to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Office to add the community to the list of national minority communities. The Sachar Committee recommended the draft of Equal Opportunity Commission is with the Union Cabinet and it will be made into a law soon. All minority communities will be covered and the Commission would have legal teeth.
The 12th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conclave got off to a flying start here in New Delhi with a colourful display. Manish Tewari, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister focused the aim of opening of Ministry of Overseas Indians. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’ key focus areas will be healthcare discussions and it will basically engage the youth. This event platform will be broader based and expanded. “Engaging Diaspora: Connecting Across Generations” is the theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014. It’s expected that this Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will open new horizons of a strong network of young overseas Indians to contribute to India’s engagement with youngsters in all sectors.
Soon, Canara Bank will open its new branch in New York. The bank has got regulatory approvals from the US authorities to open the new branch. A. K. Gupta, Executive Director of Canara Bank disclosed the news. The bank will be foraying into the US market with the opening of this branch. Also, the bank is looking to open more branches in Tokyo, Dubai, Qatar and Frankfurt (Germany).
Soon, Muslim adult education above the age of 15 years will be launched by central government. M M Pallam Raju, Union Human Resource Development Minister disclosed the news. The scheme will ensure accomplishment of functional literacy by 1 crore Muslim adults with 600 crore rupees. Initially, the scheme will be launched in 16 to 17 Muslim concentrated districts across the country. Besides, a new scheme is proposed of HUNAR at the outlay of Rs 978 crores for skill development for Muslim girls which will benefit 9.2 lakh girls.
The birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Nation known as “Guruparb” was celebrated worldwide on January 7. The 10th guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh was born on 7 January 1666 in Patna, Bihar. Large number of people visited Gurudwaras and also participated in the programmes organised to celebrate 348th birthday of Guru ji. Various seminars were organised to spread the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh to the young generation.
First comprehensive adolescent health programme of country was launched by central government. The health programme will also focus on adolescents’ sexual health. The programme aims that all adolescents in India are able to recognize their full potential by making knowledgeable and responsible decisions related to their health. The committee will address the health requirements of 243 million adolescents who comprise 21% of the total population in India.

Janet Yellen will be the newly appointed Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the central bank. The first woman to head the Federal Reserve, Yellen, will lead the Federal Reserve during the troubling time as the central bank is planning to roll back it incentive package. It’s worth mentioning here that even 6 years after the financial crisis, the bank is still facing analysis from political leaders and the internal differences. The senate voted and backed most to appoint Yellen as the new head of the central bank.

Lingaiah Nagarapu, Principal Scientist of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology was awarded with the best scientist award for 2013 of Science-Tech Foundation (STF), Bangalore. Nagarapu was recognised for his efforts in basic and applied research that resulted in the growth of 2 patents, 15 technologies and 80 international publications.
