Michelle Bachelet has again won presidential vote in Chile. Left wing candidate Bachelet’s grabbed 62 % of the votes which was the biggest presidential victory in eight decades. a moderate socialist Bachelet defeated her rival of the ruling conservative Evelyn Matthei who received only 37 % votes which was the worst and least votes in two decades. Bachelet has promised that she will spend a lot on education, will improve health facility and will diminish the gap between rich and poor.
For the third time, German Chancellor Angela Markel has been voted as the country’s head of government. The 59-year-old Markel won the vote by parliamentarians. She will be soon of appointed by Joachim Gauck, President of Germany at the President’s official residence that is Berlin’s Bellevue Palace.

National Affairs
An insurance coverage for Ganga Sagar pilgrims will be soon inaugurated by the West Bengal government this year. Javed Khan, West Bengal disaster management Minister said that 5 lakh rupees will be compensated in the death of any pilgrim and for the injured Rs 50,000 each under the insurance coverage. Also during the Ganga Sagar Mela, Disaster Management department will soon open fire fighting stations at Sagar Island in middle of January.

Appointments
CVR Rajendran has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Bank by Union Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He will remain on this post for a period of five years or until superannuation in April 2015. Before this, He was serving as an Executive Director of Bank of Maharashtra. He also served as of General Manager (GM) of the treasury and information technology division of Corporation Bank.

Awards & Honours
Tennis player Andy Murray has been named as BBC ‘Sports Personality of the year’ 2013. The tennis ace is the first British tennis player to clinch the Wimbledon in 77 years and was presented the award in Miami. He grabbed this award after his landslide victory against Novak Djokovic in July this year. Leigh Halfpenny, the Wales and Lions rugby star secured second place in this ranking while champion jockey Tony McCoy stood on third.

Book
Mumbai University has released a book titled ‘Nirbhaya: Ek Atmachintan’ to remember Nirbhaya on December 16 after a year since the brutal gang rape of the Delhi paramedical student. The varsity launched the book which has compiled thoughts, inputs and issues related to women’s empowerment and their security. Several eminent and veteran writers and philosophers have contributed for this book to make awareness about women empowerment in India.

Death
Sandeep Acharya, the Indian Idol-2 winner Sandeep Acharya has passed away at a hospital in Gurgaon on Sunday. Winner of the second season of Indian Idol, Acharya belonged to Rajasthan. The 29-year-old singer had been suffering from jaundice for fourteen days. Acharya was neglecting his health for many days and was admitted at a local hospital in Bikaner in a critical condition. Later, he was referred to Gurgaon hospital.

Atsedu Tsegay, an Ethiopian Runner is the winner of Men’s Delhi Half Marathon 2013. He made record of 21.097 km within 59 minutes 10 seconds by creating a new race record. He broke Deriba Merga’s previous record of 59 minutes 15 seconds since 2008. While Kenyan Geoffrey Kipsang, a former junior world champion stood second and his compatriot Wilson Kiprop came third. From India, FG. Laxman with a timing of 1 hour 04 minutes and 44 seconds was the top finisher for India. Meanwhile, Kenyan athlete Florence Kiplagat with a timing of 1 hour 07 minutes and 58 seconds is the winner of Women’s Delhi Half Marathon 2013. Gladys Cherono stood second while Lucy Kabuu came third. Preeja Sreedharan was the top finisher was among the Indian athletes with a timing of 1 hour 20 minutes 04 seconds.
West Indies off spinner Shane Shillingford has been suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) from bowling in international matches because of over action. His bowling arm exceeded the 15-degree level of tolerance allowed under regulations as per an independent biomechanical analysis. Also Marlon Samuels, Shillingford’s teammate and fellow-off spinner followed his quicker deliveries on similar grounds while bowling. He was found guilty during last month’s test match between India and West Indies.
