On any other day , this three-year-old girl might not have stood much of a chance. Kidnapped on Tuesday evening, she could have met a fate similar to many other homeless kids on the city streets, but for a few alert cops who conducted a nightlong operation to rescue her from her tormentor.
The girl, the daughter of a mentally challenged homeless woman, went missing from Connaught Place. It all began at 5 pm when cries of "meri beti, meri beti (my daughter, my daughter)" caught the attention of a beat constable who immediately swung into action and informed the SHO (CP), Mukesh Walia.
Even as passersby tried to ascertain the cause of the woman's delirium, the police registered an FIR and launched a search operation. The girl was rescued in the nick of time as the accused, identified as 23-year-old Tarzan, allegedly intended to assault her before selling her to a trafficker.
The girl, who was produced before the juvenile board, will now get Rs 3,500 per month from the government in an account in her name till she turns 18. For now, she has been moved to a shelter for kids. The mother has been taken to IBHAS for treatment.
Special commissioner (law & order) Deepak Mishra and joint commissioner (New Delhi) M K Meena praised the efforts of Walia and his team and will soon announce a reward for them.
Here's how the drama unfolded. An alert Walia and his team began questioning the flower sellers and shoekeepers near the temple she disappeared from. In light of the recent incidents involving minors, they immediately registered an FIR despite the mother's inability to give a statement.
"Six teams were formed and tasked with scanning the entire central and New Delhi district. A team began to col ect human intelligence ci ing the description of the girl as narrated by the pas sersby ," Meena told TOI. Beat cops scanned al night shelters and roadside dwellers. Around midnight, a beggar at Bangla Sahib Gu rudwara told the cops that he had seen a hooded man with a kid in the area.
Further investigation led hem to Tarzan's residence in east Delhi's Mandawali When the search team rea ched the man's home, it was empty . However, they found his PAN card carrying his photo. They circulated it on WhatsApp.
Police officials learnt that Tarzan earlier used to live in a night shelter at Dwarka and later at a room in Badarpur.However, he was evicted from these two places. At Bardarpur, police were told that the man had shifted base to Raghubir Nagar. A team raided the hideout and found this house locked as well. They broke it open to find the girl in tears.
The accused was, however, missing. The girl was immediately taken to hospital for check-up. The teams then scanned the area and found the accused sleeping on top of a water tank and arrested
