SONEPAT: In a tragic fallout of the dowry evil, a Haryana police constable strangled his wife and three-year-old daughter with a telephone wire before committing suicide by hanging himself on Monday night.

Ironically, Dalbir Singh, who was posted at Panipat, was against accepting dowry — a reason of discord within his own family, and something which seemingly led him to take the extreme step.

Sources said Dalbir Singh was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his house at Badwasni village, Sonepat, and his wife Sushma and daughter Prachi were found lying dead when the family woke up on Tuesday morning.

Dalbir Singh's mother reportedly found out about the incident when she went to the couple's room to give their two-year-old son milk.

Sushma's father Kanwal Singh stated in the police complaint that his daughter had married Dalbir Singh, son of Om Prakash, in 2004.

He alleged that Dalbir's parents had been pressuring them to bring more dowry, which had led to unpleasantness within the family as the Haryana constable was against the same.

On Monday night, after celebrating their son's birthday, the couple reportedly entered into an argument, sources told Times Of India, adding that Dalbir Singh was short-tempered and would often lose his cool.

A police spokesperson said a murder case was registered against Dalbir Singh and another case of killing for dowry had been registered against Om Prakash, his wife Rajwanti and two daughters Anita and Switi. No arrests were made till the filing of this report.
