Mumbai: Ahmedabad has the best-run municipal body among 63 cities in the country followed by Mysore and Pune and they have been selected for their ability to handle the complexities of urban management through intense and innovative efforts.
The Bus Rapid Transport System of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation caught the attention of urban planners as the civic bodies of Nashik and Kalyan-Dombivili in Maharashtra, Faridabad, Vadodara, Bengaluru, Vishakapatnam, Agartala, Rajkot and Surat received prizes in categories for public health, cleanliness, basic amenities, use of IT in governance, transparency and accountability.
Presenting the Nagar Ratna awards, instituted by the All India Institute of local self-government, Indian President Pratibha Patil said: "A city depends as much upon its planners and administrators as on the people dwelling in it."
