Chandigarh October 4:

During his examination as a witness in relation to an election petition pending before the Punjab and Haryana high court challenging his victory in the general elections held in February 2007, Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday expressed ignorance about various advertisements and paid news content issued in his favour at that time.

Amarinder was examined before Justice Rajive Bhalla by petitioner's counsel senior advocate Satya Jain. When Jain asked Amarinder whether he had made any payment to his election agent M P Pandove, he replied in the negative. However, when Jain showed the expenditure statement filed by Amarinder before the election officer, Patiala, which showed a payment of Rs 35,000 to Pandove, he had no reply.

In a similar query about crores of rupees spent by Khalsa Panchayat and Friends Club, Ropar, on advertisements in favour of Amarinder and other publications against Badals during the last assembly elections, he expressed ignorance about money spent on such advertisements. During his two-hour examination, he said most of the expenditure on his advertisements was made by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Punjab. The examination of the former CM will continue on Tuesday.

The election petition against the Captain's victory was filed by a voter, Sukhbir Singh, that alleged corrupt practices were adopted. The petitioner had alleged that Capt Amarinder had incurred expenditure beyond the permissible limit on his poll campaign. Moreover, he was allegedly responsible for incorrect filing of election expenses and had, thus, indulged in corrupt practice attracting the provisions of the Representation of the People's Act, it added.
