It looks like a spaceship, not the tacky neon kind but the real classy one. Featuring a black glossy finish and touch-sensitive buttons with blue lights, the MG8140 is quite a looker. But no one really buys a multifunctional machine on looks; the reason this does look like a spaceship is that it can do almost everything. It prints at the high resolutions of 9,600x2,400 dpi, which means the details in the pictures are phenomenal and little is lost to noise. The built-in software lets you print out high-resolution images from your HD movies by selecting those particular frames — a very neat touch. And it doesn't stop there — the software is capable of carrying out operations that include combining prints, web pages and other actions to make printing that much easier.
Perhaps one of the best features is the auto duplex printing, which solves the hassles of printing on both sides, helping you go greener, one page at a time. On the same line, the printer has six ink cartridges, so you only have to change the one which is out and save Mother Earth a little more pain.
The scanner itself will let you scan all your documents in high resolution (4,800x4,800) and also negatives with its CCD scanner. What is more exciting is that in addition to an image, you can get the output as a PDF and save it directly to a USB stick or a memory card; and an A4 sheet is scanned in approximately seven seconds. The device can connect to your PC through USB, of course. Alternatively, if you like to share, you can hook it up to your network with wireless or wired LAN.
All operations directly on the printer are done with its 8.8cm LCD and touch-sensitive buttons. The "intelligent button system" will light up only the buttons that are relevant to a function; it's simple but very effectively designed. The printer will take in data from just about anything you throw at it in terms of input, with support for all kinds of memory cards and USB discs.
This isn't a printer for your home, but rather a home office or a business. The MG8140 does a lot of things, and it does them well. If you're looking for a multipurpose device to serve your official needs, it will do them well and then some more.
