It has been rumoured since long that Canon was entering a camera segment they have not ventured into yet, the mirrorless cameras. If this image obtained by Japanese website digicame-info is anything to go by, this may be the first compact system camera from Canon and by the look of it, its name will be EOS M.

The first Canon mirrorless camera?

As of now, there is nothing much to go by, except this glossy press shot. But there are a few things that can be derived from it. For one, we can see that has Canon’s EOS branding, where the logo is featured at the front. But as for the name of the model, like in most compact cameras from Canon, the device’s name is located at the top on the left handside corner. This shows us that it should be titled EOS-M. From the image we can also see that it features a hot-shoe which will be useful for attaching an additional flash, as it seems that there is no built in flash on this model. There is also a shutter release button upon what appears to be a dial. From the image we cannot tell for sure if the dial is used to adjust the different modes.

Apart from the press shot, there have been a few other leaked product shots which show the camera without the 43mm pancake lens and the back of the model. As far as controls go, this model appears to be quite bare in comparison to other compact system cameras, much like a point-and-shoot camera. It appears that Canon wanted to employ a very intuitive user interface without the hassle of dials and buttons. This may be designed to target users who are stepping up from a compact digital camera, and to provide potential consumers with an easy-to-use interface.

Leaked shots appear as well

A report by CanonWatch states, “The model name is EOS M (you can see it on top of the camera). And you can see a new lens too: an EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens. New mount type is EF-M (“M” for “mirrorless”?). No word so far about sensor size and resolution. The image is said to come from a camera store, hence it should be reliable. Canon’s mirrorless system camera is expected to be announced on next Monday.”

In an updated post, CanonWatch states that according to sources, the sensor used here will be an APS-C size sensor. This is the same sensor used on Canon’s entry-level DSLR cameras. The report states, “However, if Canon’s mirrorless camera has an APS-C sensor, the pictured 22mm lens would become 36mm.”

In a later update, the website claims that Canon will unveil the EOS-M on July 23 at around 6 or 7 AM, London time. This would be around 10:30 AM in India.
