Briefly region: Badal’s nod to thermal plant

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has given in-principal approval for setting up of a 1,320-MW thermal plant in the state sector.
A decision to this effect was taken by Badal in a meeting with eight-member delegation of PSEB Engineers’ Association on Saturday evening. Badal has asked the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited to complete formalities like selection of site and plan of the plant, so that the work could be started at the earliest.
Hunt on for PPSC chairman: Two committees constituted by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for the selection of Punjab Public Service Commission chairman and its four members have invited the names of eminent persons from all walks of life for consideration. According to an official spokesman, any person can either forward his name or recommend any other person’s name, who besides this, fulfils the constitutional eligibility and age criteria for these posts.
Raids to check sale of adulterated sweets: The Punjab health department has intensified raids to check the sale of adulterated sweets in the run-up to Diwali. Moreover, Health Minister Satpal Gosain on Sunday issued orders to keep the emergency services in the hospital operational for 24 hours to handle cracker burn cases. Gosain appealed the public to either dial 108 in case of emergency or contact the hospital/community health centre.
PPCB drive increases waste collection: The Punjab Pollution Control Board’s crackdown on doctors and bio-medical treatment facilities has increased the collection of bio-medical waste at all the four biomedical waste treatment facilities in Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Pathankot, a press release by the Board said on Sunday. The release quoted the PPCB chairman as saying that the Board had conducted more than 1,000 surprise visits to hospitals since July.
Woman performs father’s last rites: In a rare case of reversal of tradition in Punjab, a woman performed the last rites of her father on Saturday. Neelu Mann, who performed the funeral rites of her father Rajinder Singh Mann at Shaheeda Sahib Cremation ground, said: “We are two daughters and it is our duty to show respect to our parents. There is nothing wrong in it. I will perform all other rituals as well.”
Bali’s son gets relief from court: In a respite to Ragubir Singh, son of former minister and Congress MLA G S Bali, a fast track court in Kangra district’s Dharamshala has set aside his one-month imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 imposed on him in a case of assault of a police personnel some years ago. The court on Saturday remanded the case to the trial court, which has been asked to ask for a report from the probation officer to proceed further in the case, if needed. Raghubir Singh is strongest contender for the post of Youth Congress president in Himachal Pradesh.
