In the first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch, Brendon McCullum, enthralled the crowd with a spellbinding innings and broke a slew of records. He became the first cricketer from his country to aggregate more than 1,000 runs in a calendar year. McCullum, known for playing blistering knocks, also went on to essay a splendid hundred on Day 1 against Sri Lanka. The hundred came off just 74 balls and it turned out to be the fastest hundred in the annals of New Zealand's Test history. He broke his own record that he set back in November against Pakistan in Sharjah, when he slammed a hundred off 78 balls.

To make it even better, McCullum, smashed Suranga Lakmal for 26 runs in a single over. He clobbered Lakmal for three sixes and two boundaries in that over. With it, he equalled New Zealand's record for scoring most runs in an over, held by their current batting coach Craig McMillan. Back in 2001 in Napier, McMillan had aggregated 26 runs off Younis Khan's bowling. Unfortunately for Lakmal, he now holds the record for conceding most runs in a single over by a Sri Lankan.

He was eventually dismissed after a wondrous innings of 195 off just 134 balls by Tharindu Kaushal. When he was on 195, he looked set to break the record held by Nathan Astle for the fastest double century in the history of Test cricket. Astle had smashed a double ton off only 153 balls against England in Christchurch in 2002.

McCullum, captain of New Zealand, has had a stellar 2014 as he notched up a triple hundred against India in Wellington at the start of the year.Incidentally, he was the first cricketer from New Zealand to score a triple hundred. Martin Crowe had scored 299 against Sri Lanka at Basin Reserve, Wellington, in 1990. Recently, McCullum also composed a match-winning double century against Pakistan in UAE.
