A Sikh police inspector saved a Muslim boy from the clutches of an angry mob on May 24 in Uttarakhand’s Ramnagar, as the mob became furious after allegedly finding the boy with a Hindu girl.

What happened?
As reported by The Lallantop, the boy and the girl met in a temple in
Girija village. The spot was a sparsely populated spot but the violent mob caught up with them. The now viral video shows Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh coming to the rescue of the boy, fearing he would be lynched by the agitated mob.

Gagandeep can be seen confronting the mob alone, while they keep on their incoherent shouting. Another policeman can be seen trying to control the crowd. When the police refused to hand the boy over to the mob, they started chanting anti-police slogans. Then they locked the door so that Gagandeep cannot leave with the boy. All this happened while they continuously tried to hit the boy and Gagandeep kept on shielding the blows.

Beaten up before police arrived
The Lallantop, quoting witnesses, reported that the boy was sitting on the floor after being thrashed and the girl was arguing with them before the police arrived.

When the girl asked a man why he had beaten up the boy, the man allegedly responded: “We will chop him to pieces. You are a Hindu and roaming around with a Muslim man. I will chop you too.”

Police said that the mob comprised of members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. The group had allegedly roughed up the boy and one of his friends by the time police arrived at the scene. The group also alleged that the couple was “getting intimate,” but the police didn’t say anything regarding this.
