BOUNTIFUL RAIN COMES TO THE RESCUE OF PSEB

Patiala August 11:
Chairman of Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), YS Ratra, IAS (Retd), said that due to the heavy rainfall in some parts of the northern region, the level of the reservoirs of Bhakra, Pong and Ranjit Sagar Dams has increased considerably, facilitating higher hydel power generation. Simultaneously, it has resulted in decrease in demand for power in Punjab as well as in other States, enabling the PSEB to drop power cuts.
The Bhakra reservoir level rose to 1,655.22 ft on August 9, 2008, against 1,617.50 ft on August 9, last year. Similarly, the levels of Pong and Ranjit Sagar Dams also increased to 1,368.43 ft and 517.63 meters respectively, much higher than last year's levels of 1,340.93 ft and 512.22 m.
In a prèss release, issued here, Ratra said that the Bhakra and Beas Management Board (BBMB) has increased the discharge of water from Pong Dam to 14,000 cusecs which has increased the share of Punjab from generation at Pong Dam from 11 lakh units (LUs) to 17 LUs and at MHP from 16 LUs to 38 LUs.
Besides 24 LUs already being received, the PSEB has started receiving additional 12 LUs from Madhya Pradesh. Due to the comfortable supply position in the State, the board has withdrawn second weekly off day on induction furnaces and steel rolling mills and 12-hour additional cuts on category-II feeders for Saturday and Sunday.
Apart from this, extended peak load restrictions of four hours on category IV feeders (continuous process industries) have also been withdrawn from Friday to Sunday. No power cuts had been imposed on any category of consumers all over the State for the last five days, Ratra added.
