Bollywood box-office report of the week

Bollywood box-office report of the week

This Friday will see the release of Kiran Rao’s DHOBI GHAT and the Manish Gupta directed HOSTEL. It is but obvious that the presence of Aamir Khan (though in a small role) and his name being associated with DHOBI GHAT will assure that the film will have a clear edge over HOSTEL, especially at the high end multiplexes (more so of Mumbai-Maharashtra).
Last week saw the release of the three Deol starrer YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA and Prakash Jha’s TURNING 30!!! As expected the Sameer Karnik directed YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA had a great weekend in the North, Central and Eastern India (especially at the single screens). Given the reasonable budget the film is all set to emulate (or may be surpass) the success of the last Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby starrer APNE. The film has also done very well in the Overseas grossing £213,366 from UK during the first weekend (14-16 January) and an amazing $563,042 from US during the opening 4-day extended weekend (14-17 January). The other release of the week, TURNING 30!!!, did not get even a half decent start and failed to interest or impress the audience.
Checking out NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, the film is on an inspired run (especially at good cinemas) and collected 2.25 crores from Bombay (collections from 49 cinemas unrecieved), 75 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 5 cinemas unrecieved), 15 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unrecieved), 1.75 lakhs from Bharuch, 13.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.55 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.65 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.15 lakhs from Junagarh, 2 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.25 lakhs from Bhuj, 20 lakhs from Pune (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 6.55 lakhs from Nasik (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 8 lakhs from Goa, 1 lakh from Belgaum, 2.85 crores from Delhi city, 37 lakhs from Noida, 26.10 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 13 lakhs from Kanpur, 24.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 5 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs from Aligarh, 3 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 60 lakhs from Gurgaon, 19 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.75 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 3.15 lakhs from Panipat, 15.50 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.15 lakhs from Bhatinda, 2.75 lakhs from Ambala, 5 lakhs from Ludhiana, 4.70 lakhs from Patiala, 2.50 lakhs from Amritsar, 91 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 5 lakhs from Siliguri, 3.30 lakhs from Guwahati, 22.70 lakhs from Nagpur, 5.50 lakhs from Jabalpur, 2.20 lakhs from Amravati, 1 lakh from Akola, 10.60 lakhs from Raipur, 30.25 lakhs from Indore, 27.20 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 4 cinemas unrecieved), 3 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 2 cinemas unrecieved), 2.35 lakhs from Ajmer, 6.55 lakhs from Kota, 25 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 3 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unrecieved), 2.25 lakhs from Latur, 1.70 lakhs from Gulbarga, 56.30 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.35 lakhs from Vijaywada, 4.65 lakhs from Vishakhapatnam, 4 lakhs from Madras (collections from other cinemas unrecieved) and 2.05 lakhs from Kochi. Netting around 20 crore during its opening week from India, the Rani-Vidya starrer NO ONE KILLED JESSICA is already an above average fare. The film has also done quite well in the Overseas grossing £155,617 from UK and $372,357 from the US till the second weekend (14-16 January).
The two other releases of the same week as NOKJ, namely VIKALP and IMPATIENT VIVEK have been totally rejected by the audience and both have turned out be trade disasters with meager collections to show.
The collections of Farah Khan’s TEES MAAR KHAN have hit rock bottom as the film collected 10 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 31 cinemas unrecieved), 4 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 4 cinemas unrecieved), 1 lakh from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unrecieved),1 lakh from Goa (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 10 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.75 lakhs from Noida, 1.55 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.10 lakhs from Kanpur, 3.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Agra, 1.15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Faridabad, 1.25 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 2.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.65 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1 lakh from Amravati, 1.55 lakhs from Raipur, 2.50 lakhs from Indore 1 lakh from Sehore, 4.75 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unrecieved), 2.35 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unrecieved) and 4.50 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding just about 1.25 crore, TEES MAAR KHAN has netted 62 crores in three weeks from India. The Akshay-Katrina starrer will end up as an above average fare, and that too after accounting for the worldwide and non-theatrical rights . TEES MAAR KHAN has also under-performed in the Overseas grossing £ 706,000 from UK and $1,076,266 from US till the fourth weekend (14-16 January).
Concluding once again with Yash Raj Films’ BAND BAAJA BAARAAT, the film is still doing good business as it collected 35 lakhs from Bombay, 4.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unrecieved), 1 lakh from Nasik, 22 lakhs from Delhi city, 3 lakhs from Noida, 2 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.15 lakhs from Kanpur, 2.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.65 lakhs from Faridabad , 1.35 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1 lakh from Ludhiana, 2.75 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 1.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1 lakh from Raipur, 1.65 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Jaipur, 5.10 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 1.60 crores, BAND BAAJA BAARAAT has netted a very impressive 23.35 crores in five weeks from India. The Anushka-Ranveer starrer will finally end up as a semi-hit. Unfortunately BAND BAAJAA BAARAAT has failed in the Overseas grossing just £63,082 from UK.
