Aamir Khan Biography

With his penchant for perfection and professionalism, Aamir Khan is one of the few method actors in Bollywood, who has taken acting to a whole new level. An actor, director, producer, playback singer, a state tennis champion, and mentor to his nephew (Imran Khan) – he’s all that and more.

Aamir was born in Mumbai to a Muslim family that has been actively involved in the Indian motion picture industry for several decades. His father, Tahir Hussain, was a film producer while his uncle, Nasir Hussain, was a film producer, as well as a director and an actor. Aamir has three siblings Faisal, Farhat, and Nikhat. His cousin Mansoor Khan is a director.

Aamir Khan was first introduced as a child artiste in the 1970′s hit Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). He made his adult acting debut in a role that went quite unnoticed in Ketan Mehta’s Holi (1984). His first notable leading role came in 1988 in the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak which was directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan. This film was a breakthrough commercial success, effectively launching Khan’s career as a leading actor. Having the typical ‘chocolate hero’ looks, he was publicised as a teen idol. He also starred in critically acclaimed film Raakh (1989). Aamir went on to appear in several other films in the late ’80s and early ’90s: Dil (1990), which became the highest grossing film of the year,Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) (for which he also wrote the screenplay), and Rangeela (1995). Most of these films were commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Aamir’s other successes include Andaz Apna Apna: the movie was reviewed unfavourably by critics, but has, over the years, gained a cult status.

Aamir’s only release in 1996 was the Dharmesh Darshan directed commercial blockbuster Raja Hindustani. In 1997, he co-starred with Ajay Devgan and was paired opposite Juhi Chawla in the film, Ishq, which did well at the box office. In 1998, Khan appeared in the moderately successful Ghulam, for which he sang the hit song, Aati Kya Khandala. John Mathew Matthan’s Sarfarosh and Deepa Mehta’s Earth 1947 were Khan’s releases in 1999. His first release for the new millennium, Mela, in which he acted alongside his real-life brother Faisal Khan, failed at the box office.

In 2001 he appeared in Lagaan, which was also his first home production. The film was a major critical and commercial success, and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards. The success of Lagaan was followed by the Farhan Akhtar directed, Dil Chahta Hai.

Khan then took a four year break citing personal problems, and returned in 2005 with Ketan Mehta’s Mangal Pandey: The Rising. The film didn’t fare well at the box office. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s award-winning Rang De Basanti was Khan’s first release in 2006. His role was critically acclaimed. Fanaa was his second release in 2006, where he starred opposite Kajol.

In 2007, Aamir took on the role of director for his second home production, Taare Zameen Par. In 2008, Khan appeared in the movie Ghajini that broke many box-office records. In the same year, Khan launched his nephew Imran Khan in another film from his production house, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

In 2009, Khan appeared in the commercially and critically acclaimed film, 3 Idiots, as Ranchodas Chanchad. The Rajkumar Hirani directed film went on to become Bollywood’s highest grossing film.

In 2010, Aamir released, under his banner, the critically acclaimed film, Peepli Live, that was based in a rural setting. Aamir returned to big screen with his fourth production Dhobi Ghat, written and directed by his wife, Kiran Rao, in 2011. His fifth home production, Delhi Belly, starring his nephew Imran Khan released in July 2011. The film was a commercial and as well as a critical success.

Aamir Khan will be seen in Reema Kagti’s Talaash next. The film, in which Aamir plays the role of a cop, is set to release on 1 June 2012. He will be playing a negative character in Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom: 3 opposite Katrina Kaif.

Akshay Kumar Biography

With his clean cut good looks and his training in martial arts, Akshay Kumar smoothly made a transition from action hero to a romantic hero and then into comedy, keeping movie buffs glued to their seats as they wait for what this Khiladi has to offer next.

Akshay Kumar was born in Amritsar, in a Punjabi family. His father was a government employee. Kumar was then raised in Delhi before moving to Mumbai where he studied at Don Bosco School and then Guru Nanak Khalsa College. He studied martial arts in Bangkok and worked as a chef. He then came back to Mumbai, where he started teaching martial arts. One of his students recommended him to do modelling and a few modelling assignments later, Kumar was offered a role in the film Deedar (1992) and too as the lead actor!

However, Kumar made his Bollywood acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh, which was followed by the 1992 thriller, Khiladi. In 1994, his action films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra which were among the highest grossing films of the year. Later that year, he was seen in Yeh Dillagi which was also a success. During the same year, Kumar also had success with films like Suhaag and the low budget action film Elaan. All these achievements, promoted Kumar as one of the most successful actors of that year.

In 1995, along with his share of unsuccessful movies, Akshay starred in the third film in his Khiladi series, Sabse Bada Khiladi, which proved to be a hit. The fourth successful film with Khiladi in the title was, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, where Akshay starred opposite Rekha and Raveena Tandon. The film became one of the highest grossing films of the year.

In 1997, Kumar was seen in a supporting role Dil To Pagal Hai. In the same year, he attempted a comedy role with the fifth film in the Khiladi series, Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi; the film failed commercially. All his next Khiladi releases in the following years went on to fail at the box office.

In 1999, Kumar received critical acclaim for his roles in the films Sangharsh and Jaanwar. Then Akshay tried his hand at comedy quite successfully in 2000 with Hera Pheri, which was a laugh riot. His film with Shilpa Shetty and Sunil Shetty, Dhadkan, also was a good performer at the box office. His negative role in Ajnabee (2001) was well received and won him a Filmfare.

The years 2003 to 2006 saw him in Awara Paagal Deewana, Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Garam Masala, and the sequel, Phir Hera Pheri. Apart from his action, comedy and romantic roles, Kumar displayed a flair for dramatic roles in films such as, Aankhen, Bewafaa and Waqt: The Race Against Time.

Akshay Kumar proved himself yet again in 2007 with almost all of his films ending up as hits: Namastey London, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Welcome. Though his much-hyped film, Tashan failed to do well in 2008, Singh is Kinng did exceptionally well in India and overseas. Akshay has also become a producer. The actor does not charge any remuneration for most of his movies now and rather steps in as a producer and takes a cut in the profit of the film. His company is called Hari Om Entertainment.

In the meantime Akshay also made his foray into television with the show Khatron Ke Khiladi (a franchisee of Fear Factor). In 2010 he hosted another TV show called Master Chef India. However, in the past two years, Akshay’s stardom suffered as the actor saw several of his films flopping one after the other: Kambakkht Ishq, Blue, Action Replayy and Tees Maar Khan.

Kumar’s Patiala House and Thank You failed at the box-office in 2011. But in the same year his

other release Desi Boyz manged to do good business at the box-office.

Akshay will be seen next in Sajid Khan’s multi-starrer, Housefull 2 which is slated for a 5 April 2012 release. Other films in the pipeline include Joker, Rowdy Rathore, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 and Khiladi 786.

He is the first Asian actor to have a wax model of his likeness displayed at Madame Tussaud’s in London, UK.

He is one of the few actors to have played a triple role – Mahaan (1983)

Amitabh Bachchan Biography

Amitabh Bachchan’s trademark deep baritone voice, tall, brooding persona and intense eyes, made him the ideal “Angry Young Man”, setting him apart from the cluster of Bollywood’s lover boys. However, his unconventional looks did work against him at the beginning of his Bollywood career, but he stayed around long enough to be become the icon of the Indian film industry.

Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad in 1942, to Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. Bachchan was initially named Inquilaab. However, at the suggestion of fellow poet, Harivansh Rai changed the name to Amitabh which means, “the light that would never go off.” Though his surname was Shrivastava, he replaced it with ‘Bachchan’, which was his father’s pen name. Amitabh Bachchan studied in Allahabad at Jnana Pramodhini and Boys High School. He completed his education at Sherwood College in Nainital and Kirori Mal College in Delhi. His first job was in Shaw Wallace. Amitabh later worked as a freight broker for a shipping firm called Bird and Co., in Kolkata, a job he quit to pursue a career in acting.

In 1969, Amitabh made his debut with Saat Hindustani, which won him the National Film Award for Best Newcomer. After this came movies like Reshma Aur Shera, Parwana, and Anand in 1971. He made a huge impact with his performance in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand alongside Rajesh Khanna, winning him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. His breakthrough as a lead was in the film Zanjeer (1973) which established his persona of the “angry young man” of Bollywood. Amitabh reworked the image of the Hindi film hero with major hits like Deewar, Sholay, Trishul and Don. He popularised the violent melodrama genre but had an equal flair for tragedies (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Shakti) and comedies (Chupke Chupke, Amar Akbar Anthony) as well. His status as a demi-god was evident when the entire nation prayed for his recovery when he met with a fatal injury during the making of Coolie in July, 1982.

In 1984, Amitabh entered politics in support of long time friend Rajiv Gandhi. He contested Allahabad’s Lok Sabha seat and won by a huge margin. Accusations of him being involved in the Bofors Scandal made him quit politics, although, later on, he was proved innocent. Amitabh returned to films with blockbusters like Shahenshah, Agneepath, Hum and Khuda Gawah. A series of flops in mid 90’s and the collapse of his company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd. landed him in immense debts. He returned back to movies but with no success.

In the year 2000, he stepped up to host the television show Kaun Banega Crorepati and later was seen in Mohabbatein along with Shah Rukh Khan. Both these ventures proved extremely successful. Since then Amitabh has been on a roll. At sixty plus, with all the endorsements and accolades, he is a greater icon than he was at the height of his popularity three decades ago.

In recent past we have seen Amitabh doing vastly different roles in fims like Sarkar Raj, The Last Lear, Paa, Teen Patti and Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap.

He was last seen in Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan in 2011, the film failed to do well at the box-office but Amitabh’s role was widely appreciated.
