Chandigarh June 30:

KPS Gill, the supercop of Punjab police when the State was gripped with terror endorsed the rejection of mercy petition of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, a dreaded terrorist of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).

In a formal interaction with media Gill said, “There is no other way to deal with a dreaded terrorist. He must be hanged till death.” Bhullar was convicted for killing nine people and injuring 31 in Delhi. Gill’s comment has come in the backdrop of Akal Takht and some political parties demanding that the death penalty of Bhullar be commuted to life imprisonment.

Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has already launched a statewide campaign for Bhullar’s mercy. The organisation is also going to file a review clemency petition before President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil. Asked about the issue of ‘capital punishment’, Gill, credited with ending terrorism in the State, said, “Either the Central Government should withdraw capital punishment or enforce the law.”

On the current strength of Punjab police, the former DGP said during the time of terrorism, there was an increase in the number of police personnel that helped control insurgency. They have now started working in the right direction to go high tech and this will help them in the future, he said. Gill, who was the DGP of the State when it was gripped in a reign of Khalistani terror, said that there is no scope for terrorism in Punjab. He said perhaps Naxalism was trying to raise its head.
