The dates are out finally! The much-awaited cross platform versions of BlackBerry Messenger will be dropping by for Android and iOS this weekend. While Android users will be able to start using the application on September 21, iOS users will be able to get hold of BBM for their devices the next day.

In a blog post announcing the impending launch, BlackBerry’s Blog Manager Donny Halliwell wrote that the cross-platform messaging application will be available for free on Google Play and Apple App Store and will continue to evolve quickly on Android and iOS platforms

Both iOS and Android users will be able to enjoy the BBM chat experience on their phones. You will be able to send and receive messages on your phones from friends using Android, iOS and BlackBerry smartphones. The USP of this chat function on BBM is the ability to see when your friend has received and read your messages.

It will allow sharing files such as photos and voice notes – a basic functionality for all cross-platform messaging applications today. Similarly, you will be able to create a group with up to 30 participants in order to chat simultaneously. Quite like WhatsApp and WeChat, you will be able to send broadcast messages to all your BBM contacts at once. You will also be able to personalise your profile with a picture and a status message that your contacts will be able to see in updates.

You need not bother with giving out your phone numbers to chat with someone on BBM, quite like the way the service works on BlackBerry. It provides a unique PIN number that will be your identification, letting you keep your privacy intact. BlackBerry has said that its BBM Channels, BBM Voice Calling and BBM Video Calling features are currently missing on the two platforms, but will be available in the near future.

The application will be available to download for Android devices running version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above and iOS 6 and up for Apple devices on the respective app stores.
