Ranbir Kapoor's character in Barfi doesn't have a single dialogue. The trailer of the film, keeping his deaf and mute character in mind, relies completely on the background score to highlight Ranbir's performance.
Ranbir, who sports a thin, golden braid in Barfi, had a blast with the two leading ladies of the film - Priyanka Chopra and southern siren Illeana D'Cruz at the unveiling of the film's first look by director Anurag Basu in Mumbai on Monday.
The trailer of the film was simultaneously released on YouTube, and has received more than 1,66,000 hits within no time while Ranbir's deaf and mute act in the film was appreciated so much that he was trending on Twitter.
The 2.27-minute long fast-paced trailer on YouTube has no dialogues and shows Ranbir clowning around. He has shown great chemistry with newcomer Illeana, who is his romantic lead in the film. Priyanka, who plays a mentally challenged girl, sports short, curly hair and dowdy outfits in the film. She has gone completely de-glamorous to get into the skin of the character.
Ranbir has drawn inspiration from "Charlie Chaplin and Mr Bean" for his character, where he has to convey everything through his actions and emotions. His fans have also been gushing about his braid.
Illeana, a Goa-based model who has worked in several hit southern films such as Pokiri, Devdasu and Kedi, plays a Bengali girl in the film.
Netizens have gone gaga over Ranbir-Illeana's chemistry in the trailer, which doesn't have much of Priyanka.
At the launch, Ranbir clowned around with his co-actors, putting to rest speculations that he and Priyanka shared cold vibes. Rumours were rife that the actors had a misunderstanding on the sets of their previous film Anjana Anjani in 2010.
"Illeana has the maximum dialogues in the film. Since Ranbir's character is that of a mute boy, he emotes through actions while Priyanka too has to rely on her facial expressions in the film," director Anurag Basu said, explaining his forthcoming dark comic thriller. Basu, who has previously made films such as Life…in a Metro and Gangster, had scored a dud with his last film, the Hrithik Roshanstarrer Kites.
Meanwhile, Ranbir's fans have already declared the film a hit. "Even though RANBIR KAPOOR's character doesn't talk in #BARFI. He as an actor speaks volumes. Period!" tweeted Devansh Patel. "Barfi trailer charming. This Ranbir Kapoor grabs your attention and won't let go," tweeted producer Pritish Nandy.
