An unimaginable instance of betting has come to light in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where bankruptcy led a man to keep his wife at stake in an IPL bet and later losing her.

Residing in Govindnagar area, a man, in hope of winning some cash in the ongoing betting season due to IPL, put his wife at stake and lost the bet.

After he lost her, she complained of harassment by the fellow gamblers to social activists, who then approached the local police.

Registering a case against the accused, the police told that after the man lost all his money in share market, he used his wife to win some cash in IPL betting but lost there too.

"Recently, he lost her in IPL betting following which her husband’s fellow gamblers started making rounds of their house. They began harassing her on phone. Sensing trouble, she finally lodged a complaint against her husband on Friday," police said.

Ajai Prakash Srivastava, SHO Govindnagar, said, "As per his wife, he would beat her up every now and then and once he even asked her to bring Rs 7 lakh from her parents."

Reports claim that things were not fine between the couple since day one of their marriage. They had tied the knot five years ago.

"On the very first day of marriage, her husband, who was into share business, asked her to handover her jewellery and other valuables. Later, she got to know that he had all the vices, including drinking and gambling. Over the years, he either sold or lost in gambling all the valuables of their household. Now, he was planning to sell the house, but situation became grave, when, he eventually put her on stake as well in IPL betting and lost her," said a police official.
