Apple launched the latest iteration of its iPhone, 6S and 6S Plus, on Wednesday, with 3D touch, an enhancement of the 'Force Touch' technology used in the Apple Watch that recognises the pressure with which users are pressing the screen.

The 6S and 6S Plus will cost the same as the 6 and 6 Plus phones starting at $199 for the 16-GB version with a two-year contract in the US.

The new phones, which will come in four metal finishes, will also come with an improved 12-megapixel camera that can record 4K videos.

Other key features include Live Photos, which shoots dynamic pictures, and screen-based retina flash for the front camera, allowing for low-light selfies.

The phones can be pre-ordered starting September 12 and will go on sale on the 25 of this month. The phones will be available in US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK to start with.

Apple's new mobile operating system iOS 9 releases on September 16.

Apple relies heavily on the sale of its flagship iPhones, which drove nearly two-thirds of the company's revenue in the most recent quarter.

The company sold more than 74 million iPhones in the first three months after it released the super-sized iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models last year. That's 46% more phones than it sold in the same period a year earlier. To get that same 46% increase, Apple would have to sell more than 108 million iPhones in the next three months.
