While Apple’s newly announced iPad isn’t for everyone — especially people who want multtasking or video conferencing — one thing’s for sure: it really has raised the stakes on what an acceptable tablet chassis design in 2010 looks like. Apple’s iPad is slim, affordable, powerful and beautiful: a thin slate of glass, ebony and aluminum with only one button sullying the otherwise streamlined design.
Case in point: AIS’ newest tablet machine. Spec wise, it’s not bad:

• A Low-Reflectance Resistive Touchscreen

• It is rated for multiple 3-foot drops, as well as being IP54 Rated Water/Dustproof and Vibration-resistant
• Thin and Lightweight; only 2.6 lbs
• Long Battery Life: up to 6 hours Operating Time (with 2nd Battery)
• 802.11 b/g/n WLAN; Bluetooth V2.0 +EDR
• Hot-Swappable 2nd Battery Option
• Available OSes are Windows XP Professional Embedded / Windows XP Embedded
• Accessories include Add-on 2nd Battery; Cradle/Dock; Credit Card/MSR (magnetic swipe reader); Barcode Reader; Rubber Grips; 3G Module; Stand
• It’s capable of 3G service
Not bad, if you don’t mind netbook specs (which Apple’s iPad is, for all intents and purposes, as well). But man, look at that chassis design: that amount of extraneous buttons just isn’t going to cut the mustard in today’s day and age. And AIS isn’t exactly being forthright about the price either, which doesn’t bode well.
