After launching its 4G services in Pune back in October, Airtel is expanding its circles. The company has launched prepaid and postpaid 4G services in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. As per the press release, Airtel's 4G will be using LTE technology to deliver access to fast data services.

Commenting on the occasion, Jagbir Singh, CTO and Director, Network Services Group-Bharti Airtel, said, “The much awaited launch of Airtel 4G services fulfills a huge market requirement and will give customers in Chandigarh the power to upgrade to cutting edge 4G LTE technology - the most advanced wireless broadband experience available across the globe today. This launch is another first by Airtel that further enhances the footprint of mobile broadband in India. We are optimistic about the potential of Airtel 4G services and invite our data savvy customers in Punjab to enjoy this world class data experience”.

Airtel has launched its LTE services in more cities

In 2010, Airtel had successfully bid for BWA license spectrum in Kolkata, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai) circles. Additionally, earlier last year, Bharti Airtel acquired 49 percent interest in Qualcomm AP’s India entities that hold BWA licenses in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala. The company has launched its 4G LTE services in Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune and now Chandigarh, and is currently working towards rolling out LTE networks in remaining license circles.

Back in February, Airtel had announced that it would be launching voice services for its 4G customers in Pune through its existing GSM network. The operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB) voice solution in the operator’s live TD-LTE network in the city. With CSFB, the network can transfer customers to GSM platform to make and receive voice calls and access voice mails while retaining the experience of fast data services on 4G smartphones.

Nokia Siemens Networks has deployed its radio network elements in addition to its voice core and packet core network elements to Airtel's network in Pune. The company deployed its Single RAN (radio access network) platform, based on its Flexi Multiradio Base Station. In addition, its Mobile Softswitching (MSS) systems and its Liquid Core-based Evolved Packet Core (EPC) platform, including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway) have also been deployed. Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management system NetAct has been implemented to monitor, manage and optimise the network.

Airtel launched its 4G services in Pune back in October 2012 and became the first service provider in Maharashtra to bring 4G to customers.

Airtel 4G gives customers access to data for high definition (HD) video streaming, instant uploading of photos, rich content and much more. Bharti Airtel also has plans for rolling out India’s first multi-mode LTE TDD smartphone in India, along with partners Qualcomm and Huawei.
