Adobe has just released the latest version of its professional photography software, Lightroom 5. The latest version has been optimised for Mac OS X and Windows users. The beta version was released in April and lets users have a look at what the software lets you do.
Some of the features users will have access to include DNG Smart Previews, which allows photographers to work on their RAW images while reducing the strain that such large files put on users computer disk space. Additional features include radial gradient, a new healing brush as well as being able to automatically straighten out distorted images using a feature called “Upright”.
Adobe has stated that Lightroom has been optimised for digital photography workflow. It combines photography tools as well as image editing into a single application. This is different from the Adobe Bridge, which is designed to work with graphic, image and video file types, and manages files. Additionally, Lightroom uses a catalog structure, which really helps to speed up searches and allows it to store information about images and display them on offline media.

According to The Verge, the company has said that since the beta release in April, it has addressed more than 400 bugs. Adobe has also integrated Lightroom 5 with Behance, which is the social sharing service it bought over late last year. Adobe has priced the Lightroom 5 at $149 (Rs 8,600 approx) for a new license and $79 (Rs 4,500 approx) for an upgrade from any version of Lightroom. This is a lot more expensive than Apple’s Aperture, which is priced at $79.99. Adobe has also thrown in free subscriptions for its Creative Cloud service.
In terms of formats, Lightroom 5 supports the majority of native camera raw file formats as well as PNG, DNG, TIFF and JPEG formats, all of which are seen in digital cameras. Lightroom5 also supports PSD file format so users can easily integrate their images with Adobe Photoshop.
