Had the government acted on a Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) report released in 1995, confirming presence of uranium and other heavy metals beyond permissible limits in water samples collected from Bathinda, preventive measures could have been put in place.
This is what a GNDU team leader, who has carried out extensive research in this field, had to say.
Surinder Singh, a senior professor in the department of physics, GNDU, said that apart from Bathinda, traces of uranium were also detected in Amritsar district.
‘‘Had the government paid heed to the GNDU team findings on uranium presence, some preventive measures such as installations of RO systems and creating awareness among general public could have been undertaken to minimize the damage,’’ Singh pointed out.
