Former Stanford University swimmer, Brock Turner, who was convicted of sexual assault was now registered as a sex offender in his home state of Ohio after he was released on Friday from the California prison.

The 21-year-old raped a young woman behind a rubbish bin on the campus of Stanford near San Francisco in January 2015, while he was intoxicated. He was given a six-month jail term of which, but he served for three months for three sexual assault counts: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

Brock, who is living with his parents in Ohio must now register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life as a tier III sex offender. Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer told reporters on Friday that Turner would be “treated no differently than any other sex offender,” which means he cannot work with children or live close to places where children gather, such as parks, schools or playgrounds. He will be subjected to random drug and alcohol tests and searches of his home, and cannot move elsewhere without informing the authorities.

His neighbours will also receive postcards from the sheriff’s office to inform them that a sex offender is living nearby, and his name, address, and photos will remain publicly available on the state’s online sex offender registry for life.

Turner could have been sentenced for 14 years in prison. Prosecutors had asked for six years, but Judge Aaron Persky had sentenced his jail term to six months and three years of probation. The judge’s decision drew flak and many criticised him for being too lenient. A new bill has been passed last week at the California state assembly that mandates prison terms for people who sexually assaults unconscious or intoxicated victims. The bill is now awaiting the Governor’s signature.
