An elderly woman, belonging to a high-profile business family, and her maid were done to death in the posh Maqbool Road area of Amritsar on the eve of the Heart of Asia summit, when the city had been turned into a fortress.

Shukla Seth, 80, grandmother of dera Radha Soami head Gurinder Dhillon’s daughter-in-law, and her maid Manjit Kaur, 60, were found murdered with sharp-edged weapons in the house on Friday morning. Seth used to live with her maid in the house as her husband had died and her three daughters are married.

After getting information, the dera head visited the Seths’ house and stayed there for around 40 minutes.

Police are suspecting it to be the handiwork of robbers though there are no reports of money and goods stolen from the house.

Police teams led by police commissioner Lok Nath Angra are camping at the crime spot since morning but are clueless about the identity of the suspects.

Deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Gagan Ajit Singh said: “Only these two women used to live in the house. Gatekeeper Nar Bahadur spotted the bodies in the morning and informed the police. We are on the job and forensic teams have been called to collect clues.”

Police are finding it hard to get clues as there are no closed-circuit television cameras in the lavish house. A case under Section 302 (murder) has been registered against unidentified suspects at the Civil Lines police station.
