5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes western Pacific: USGS

VANUATU 24may: A moderate 5.5 magnitude quake struck deep under the sea near Vanuatu in the western Pacific today, the US Geological Survey said.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued. The USGS said the quake struck at 7:19 am (0149 IST) with an epicentre 56 kilometres from capital Port-Vila at a depth of 129 kilometres.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake and huge tsunami crashed into Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga in September last year, wiping out villages and resorts and killing 184 people.
