4 Student Drown In River Beas

Four students were swept away in the Beas river near Naushera Pattan near Purana Shala area in this district while on a school picnic.
The bodies of three girls, student' of standard x were fished out of the water by rescue teams while the search was on for their missing male classmate, police station in charge, Purana Shala, Sansar Chand, told reporters.

Mr Chand, who is leading the rescue operations, said that 38 tenth standard students of Star Public School, Mukerian, accompanied by three teachers and a helper, had come to the Naushera Pattan bridge for a picnic, though this place is not developed as a picnic spot.

Around noon, a group of four students ventured near the water and suddenly one of them began drowning. The other three and a teacher, who tried to rescue them, were also swept in the current. The bus driver, however was able to save the teacher Gagandeep Kaur while the four students were swept away.

Police rushed to the spot and the police team recovered three bodies identified as that of Shilpa, Sunal and Nidhi while efforts were continuing to trace the missing boy Vikrant. Principal of the school Dharmvir Sharma had reached the spot, Mr Chand said. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal has expressed profound grief over the deaths and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
