NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man was arrested on Thursday night from Dankaur in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly kidnapping and raping a Narela-based 16-year-old girl.

The teenager had reportedly fled with the man, her neighbour, on the false promise of marriage.

The accused, Dharamraj, was brought to the city on Friday morning along with the girl who was handed over to her parents who stay at Nihal Vihar near Narela in outer district.

According to the police, the girl went missing from her house on April 29 after which her parents lodged a missing complaint at the Narela police station.

During investigations, police found that Dharamraj too was missing. Enraged, the girl’s family lodged a case of kidnapping and rape against him.

Even as the police were looking for her, they received a call from Dankaur from the girl, who told the cops that she is happy with Dharamraj and wanted to marry him. She also requested the cops to withdraw the case against him.

However, the police sent a special team to Dankaur. "We had to take action against the man as it was a case of elopement with a minor girl. The team raided their Dancour hideout and arrested the man. The girl, too, has given a statement that she had fled with him on the false promise of marriage. Hence, we are investigating the case and would take action accordingly," said a senior police
