1947 and thereafter

Ever since independence in 1947, persistent, calculated and regular attempts are made on economical, cultural and political levels to annihilate the minorities, especially the Sikhs. On 10 th Oct. 1947 the Sikhs were declared a tribe of cruel dacoits and looters (Jraem Pesha Kaum) by the so called iron man, the Home Minister Mr. Patel of free India and they were to be maltreated under a secret circular to all the Deputy Commissioners. The promise about framing the Indian Constitution with the consent of Sikhs was broken in 1950 just after three years of independence. When all states were organized on the basis of languages Punjab was denied this right on the flimsy ground that Punjab is a border state. Decisions for capital of Punjab, boundaries of Punjab and waters of the rivers of Punjab are still hanging fire. Such is the irony of fate of Sikhs in free India.

The Sikhs started a peaceful movement of courting arrests in Lakhs in the year 1977 against emergency, when hardly any leader raised his head against it. Though emergency was removed the ego of the Prime Minister made her mad to teach lessons to Sikhs. Non-acceptance of just demands led to frustration of the Sikh youth. The movement turned to violence. This was just what Mahatma Gandhi has told Sikhs, when he was asked what the Sikhs shall do, if justice is not given to them in free India, and he had said they can take to arms as preached by Guru Gobind Singh. To give bad name to the movement, government infiltrated its men to put oil in the fire and innocent people got killed. In 1982 and then in 1984 by the firing of CRPF at the Golden Temple Complex situation deteriorated further. Preparations were made for a big attack at the Golden Temple.

Under repeated assurances that Golden Temple will not be attacked, Golden temple complex was attacked by the Indian army from 4th to 6th June 1984. Simultaneously 39 historical Gurudwaras of Punjab were taken over by the Indian forces. Thousands of devotees were killed and arrested on the historical day of Martyrdom of Fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev ji. The administrative control of Golden Temple and Akaal Takhat was handed over to Shromini Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee after three and a half months on 25 th September 1984. Many of the Sikh Archives and important documents were looted and burnt by the army. Even after 18 years, several sikhs are still languishing in jails without any cases. Justice is denied and the struggle is still on.

Respect of all religions is the basic conception of the Sikh religion as all humans are children of God. A bright example was the Jama Masjid of Mukatsar in Punjab was in the protection of Sikhs since 1947, since the partition of India and creation of Pakistan. The Muslims felt themselves safe while praying inside the Masjid while Sikhs were at their security. It was only in June 1994 when there was no fear of any kind as such that the Masjid was handed over to the Muslims.

Slogans of secularism are made at the highest pitches but minorities are denied their rights. Big announcements are made that religion should not be mixed with politics, but all politicians go to astrologers in search of good times and stars, go to places of worships, do any rituals and hypocritical acts to get votes. Mischief is played on Secularism: Very few believe in respect for all religions, majority treats religion with contempt or hate to other religions.

The Sikhs believe:
Raaj bina neh Dharam chle hein,
Dharam bina sabh daley maley hain.

Without power one cannot practice righteousness,
Without righteousness whole mankind shall go astray.
