Seventeen Indians have been sentenced to death by a Sharjah shariah court for killing a Pakistani and leaving three others injured in an attack last year.

Judge Yousuf Al Hamadi sentenced the 17 men to death after all evidence, including DNA tests, showed they had knifed the Pakistani to death, Khaleej Times reported today.

The attack in January last year followed a fight over the control of illegal liquor business in the Al Sajaa area of Sharjah, one of the emirates of UAE.

In New Delhi, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs said it had sought a report from the consulate in Sharjah. Although initial reports suggest that majority of those involved — the convicted men are in the age group 17-30 — are from Punjab, the Ministry is seeking details of all and the exact nature of the case.

“We will do everything possible to save their lives. We have decided to extend all possible help in fighting the case,” Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi told The Indian Express. He said the consular general has been asked to provide legal aid to the Indians.

The sentence is thought to be the largest single number of people sentenced to death at one time in the UAE. Sharjah is the only emirate in UAE where consumption, possession or trade in alcohol is completely banned. In neighbouring Dubai, known for its nightclubs and beach bars, it is loosely regulated.

Sharjah police said the suspects had attempted to kill three other compatriots of the victim, but they managed to escape.
