At least 107 killed have been killed and nearly 900 students feared buried after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale rocked South West China's Sichuan province on Monday.

Nearly 900 students in southwest China's Sichuan Province were feared buried when a high school building collapsed Dujiangyan, Sichuan in an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale on Monday afternoon, Xinhua reported.

At least four third-graders - two boys and two girls - were confirmed dead at Juyuan Middle School in Juyuan Township of Dujiangyan City, about 100 kilometers from the epicenter in Wenchuan County, parents and witnesses said.

Xinhua reporters saw a three-story school building had partially collapsed. Some buried teenagers were struggling to break loose from underneath the ruins while others were crying out for help.
Grieved parents watched as five cranes were excavating at the site and an ambulance was waiting, the agency said.

The tremors were felt in Beijing and Shanghai and other cities in the country, official Xinhua news agency said.
China rushed its troops to the earthquake-struck Wenchuan County of southwest Sichuan province for disaster relief work, with President Hu Jintao ordering all out effort efforts to help the affected people.
Chengdu Military Area Command has dispatched the troops who would assist the local government in Wenchuan county to guage the situation and help in relief work, Xinhua said.

Premier Wen Jiabao was on his way to the area to direct the rescue work.

The quake struck Wenchuan County with a population of 1,11,800 in the southeast part of the Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, 146 km to the northwest of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan, the State Seismological Bureau said.

The earthquake also struck eastern Beijing measuring 3.9 on the Richter Scale, China's Seismological Forecast Network said.
As buildings swayed, people ran out in panic and poured into the streets.
The agency reports said there were cracks on walls of some residential buildings in the downtown areas in Chengdu, but no building collapsed. Telecom networks in Chengdu and Chongqing cities broke down for a while after the quake.

In China's economic hub, Shanghai, people were evacuated from office buildings in Hongqiao and Nanjing Road, the agency said.

The State Seismological Bureau had initially given the magnitude of the quake in Wenchuan as 7.6 but later revised it to 7.8.

The Hong Kong Observatory said in a bulletin that the epicentre was initially determined to be at 31.3 degrees north latitude and 103.3 degrees east longitude, or 80 kilometres west-northwest of Chengdu.
"My colleagues, more than 50 people, rushed downstairs from the sixth floor into the open space in front of the building," Lisa Wang, an office worker in the Oriental Plaza at downtown Beijing, was quoted as saying. The whole building was evacuated after the tremor, she said.

The quake was also felt in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, where people rushed out of homes and offices and came to the streets. Many said they felt dizzy and saw the pendant lamps on their ceilings swinging back and forth.

Tremors were also reported from Lanzhou, capital of the northwest China's Gansu Province and in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the agency said.
