Lucknow, Feb. 19: It came four days after Valentine’s Day but it was a true Valentine wedding nevertheless. Shafi Mohammad, a resident of Dera Sarai Phulwar in Sambhal district, married Quraisha, a resident of Turtipura village under Nakhasa police station. What makes this wedding unique is that the groom is about 100-years-old while the bride is 90-years-old. Shafi Mohammad’s baraat included his four sons, 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Quraisha, a widow, has three children but does not remember the number of grandchildren she has. "We do not know when and where my great-grandfather met his bride but we were rather shocked when he informed us that he was marrying at this age. However, we realised that he is entitled to his happiness and did not object. We all went for the wedding and enjoyed ourselves," says Hashim, one of the great grandsons. The wedding, initially, became the butt of jokes in the village but has now been accepted by all. "At their age, they are entitled to their share of happiness and if this makes them happy, who are we to object," says R.K. Tyagi, a local businessman. Incidentally, the newly-wed couple will not be able to whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ears since both suffer from hearing impairment due to old age.
