Fukuoka city of Japan recently reopened a busy street that collapsed into a giant sinkhole just outside a busy railway station. The 30 metre wide hole was repaired in 48 hours. The efforts of workers who toiled round the clock have garnered a lot of praise on social media.
The massive hole measuring around 30 metres (90 feet) wide and 15 metres (50 feet) deep, opened up during construction work on the city’s underground network. Japanese workers pumped huge amounts of wet cement and sand into the hole, and also fixed the electricity, gas and water lines , that had stopped working, following the accident.
The road reopened to traffic and pedestrians early on Tuesday after the local officials declared the repaired stretch safe. The week long rush to reopen the busy stretch of road included repairs to a sewage pipe and to replace traffic lights and utility poles that were swallowed when the sinkhole opened up.
An earnest apology was also issued immediately for the disruption. Now, there is barely any sign that the sinkhole ever existed.
The mayor of Fukuoka also claimed that the street was now 30 times stronger than before and said that a panel of experts was being called in to establish what went wrong in the first place.
