A 10-year-old boy was killed in celebratory firing at his uncle’s wedding ceremony in Girdharganj area of Gorakhpur on Sunday night, police said.

Shreyansh Singh, a class 5 student at the city’s Mount Litera School, fell to a bullet fired from an unlicensed pistol by the groom’s allegedly drunk friend Deepak Dubey. The police have arrested Dubey.

The boy was shooting a video of his uncle Om Singh (the groom) and the bride at the post-wedding dinner.

Dubey, who posed for a photo with the groom and bride, allegedly took out his pistol and fired a shot which hit the boy a few metres away.

He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead due to excessive loss of blood, the police said.

“We received information about the incident late Sunday night. A 10-year-old boy has died in the incident. The police have arrested the accused,” Hemraj Meena, superintendent of city police, told reporters in Lucknow on Monday.

Shreyansh was the only son of his parents. His father Shardesh Singh is an accountant at the Deoria district treasury.

The boy’s maternal grandfather Ram Naresh Singh said: “The accused was known to us. We had invited him with his family. He fired the bullet that hit my grandson, causing his death. We have lodged a police complaint against him.”

Police are searching for the video camera used by the boy and examining footage shot by others.
