VIJAYAWADA: A court in Machilipatnam on Thursday sentenced Karunababu, who hacked to death his girlfriend Kotapadu Padmasri (17) for refusing to marry him, to life term.

Delivering the judgment, first additional district and sessions judge MSK Jaiswal said death sentence was not considered as it was not the rarest of the rare cases. He cited the case of MCA student Srilakshmi’s murder in which the death penalty awarded to the prime accused, Manohar, by a local court was later commuted to life sentence by the high court.

The judgment should be a lesson to the perpetrators of violence against innocent girls, particularly girl students, city mayor S Mallika Begum opined. The entire trial was completed in less than nine months. Padmasri was killed with a sharp weapon on August 16 last year when she was fetching water from a municipal tap.

Karunababu (22) was a native of Vissannapet in Krishna district and fell in love with Padmasri of Hazaraiahpet in Nuziveedu where he was studying degree.

He kept pestering the girl who spurned him and enraged over her parents’ refusal to his proposal, he went to the her house on that fateful day and attacked her. He was arrested at Vissannapet the next day.

The prosecution examined 14 witnesses in the case.
