SHIMLA: Pushing for making the state a knowledge hub, Himachal government has put forth a demand before the Central government for an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in the state. Speaking at a ministers' conference on higher and technical education at Delhi, Narinder Bragta, minister for technical education, said the state government had already offered a hundred acres of land for the institute, sources said.

Given the land and other infrastructure needs for setting up such an institute, land has been identified at other locations also, Bragta told the gathering. "We will send a detailed project report for setting up the institute once the central government in principle approves the project," he added.

The minister demanded setting up of polytechnic colleges in five districts under national skill development mission and also sought funds for strengthening technical education infrastructure under the mission. The state presently had eight government and four private technical colleges, but there were five districts without any technical institute, he pointed out.

He also made a case for having a different set of rules for setting up technical education institutes in hilly areas because of the difficult topographical constraints the region faces.
