New Delhi April 25:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested former chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi, in connection with the CWG cam.

While no official announcement with regard to Kalmadi’s arrest has been made, sources said the former CWG OC chief was arrested for irregularities in the Queens Baton Relay (QBR) and Time Scoring and Result (TSR) system contract.

The arrest followed Kalmadi’s questioning by the CBI for the third time today. Sources said Kalmadi was arrested after the CBI found damning evidence against him. A two-member CBI team recently returned from London after carrying out extensive investigations in the QBR scam. So far, Kalmadi had maintained that he hasn't benefitted a single rupee from the CWG.

The CBI is reported to have got some new leads about how Kalmadi put his signatures on the request from one of his former colleagues, Sanjay Mohindroo for releasing a sum of 1,46,000 British pounds. AM Cars and Films - the firm that was contracted for supplying video screens and cars for the Queen's Baton Relay - has informed the investigators about how OC officials like TS Darbari and Sanjay Mohindroo had conspired with them.

But it’s the time scoring equipment scam that the investigators are most upbeat about. Sources say that the CBI has got leads of a Hyderabad-based company AKR Constructions which is being suspected of being a frontal company for Kalmadi. A sum of Rs 13 crores was deposited in this firm's account by Swiss timing firm that got the time scoring equipment contract. But making the job difficult for CBI is the fact that the entire deal had been approved by many government officials as well.
