AMARINDER LAUNCHES MASS CONTACT PROGRAMME

Chandigarh April 20:
Cocking a snook at the party directive and throwing an open challenge to the PPCC chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh launched a mass contact programme on his own.
He held his first political rally at Dera Baba Nanak in the border district of Gurdaspur and drew huge crowds. The coordination committee of the PPCC had restrained Amarinder Singh from speaking to the Press and holding rallies parallel to the PPCC president. Observers see in today's rally of Amarinder a virtual invitation to the party high command to take action against him.
Reports received here said that the rally was largely attended and people raised slogans of "Bring Back Captain". Amarinder once again accused Bhattal of playing a friendly match with the Akalis. "I have no differences with Bhattal but my only objection is to the compromises she has been making with the ruling party". He said that the Akalis deserved to be taken by their horns.
Sitting MLAs Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu, former MLAs Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Jugal Kishore Sharma, Harpartap Singh Ajnala accompanied Amarinder Singh during his visit to Dera Baba Nanak. Amarinder said that he was overwhelmed by the response of the people of the border district. The two-day programme, originating from Majha's Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts, would be extended to other parts of the State, he declared.
He said that more than 6,000 Congressmen had been booked in false cases by the SAD-BJP Government. Amarinder's action is taken as a direct confrontation with Bhattal who is also going to start 'Lalkar rallies' against victimisation of Congress workers by the State Government.
The former Chief Minister alleged that Jathedars were running police stations in the State. Lashing out at the Badal Government, he said that the bureaucracy was losing faith in the present Government and that the people were getting fed up with this regime where law and order had taken a turn for the worse.
He admitted of differences with Bhattal on vital issues. On seeing the response from the public, he said that although he had been restrained by party high command from holding parallel rallies, no one could stop him from meeting people or listening to their grievances. "All the 20 districts of the State will be covered under the mass contact programme'', he said.
"It is shameful that some of our leaders are playing friendly cricket matches with the rival party that has made life miserable for our workers'', he stated. Hundreds of complainants gave him documents relating to the political vendetta unleashed by the ruling party, resulting in large-scale victimisation of Congress workers. Asked about the disciplinary action that might be taken against him by the party, he said he was a loyal soldier of the Congress and was not doing anything unlawful.
