Air India today completed payment of interim compensation of Rs.14.06 crore to the survivors and to the families of the passengers who died in last month's Mangalore air crash, the national carrier said.

"A team of officials has paid the interim compensation amounting to Rs.14.06 crore, to the families of 151 victims and to the eight survivors," said an Air India spokesperson.

"An amount of Rs 3.06 crore was also dispersed from the Prime Ministers' Relief Fund to the families of 151 victims and to the eight survivors," he added.

The spokesperson said compensation to one family of a passenger who died is pending. "As the claimant is currently out of the country, he has confirmed to us that he would contact our attorneys at Mumbai shortly," he said.
The families of the six crew members who died will be seperately compensated as the benefits accruing to them will be as per the company's rules and regulations, another Air India official said.

The interim compensation payment process, which began on the May 28, was completed within 20 days, in three sittings - May 28, 29, June 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10.

There were only eight survivors in the tragedy which claimed 158 lives when the IX-812 coming from Dubai overshot the runway at the Mangalore airport and fell off a cliff on May 22. A total of 166 people were on board the flight including six crew members. (IANS)
