LUDHIANA: Acid attack on a woman in the city on Sunday has left many people shocked and concerned about the increasing number of such cases in the city. Whereas in most other cases in the past, the acid attacks were carried out following the unrequited love, the attack on Sunday was allegedly carried out by in-laws of the victim.

It was on Sunday that Ekta, who was already having problems with the in-laws, was allegedly attacked by her father-in-law and her husband's elder brother on her way to the market. Ekta, who was married to Varun, a resident of Chander Nagar in 2006, and has a one-year-old son Bhavishya, had a case of dowry registered against them.

However, Pushpa Sahni, mother of the victim, informed that Ekta was going to market with her friend Jaswinder Kaur and her one-year-old son, when her in-laws in an Indica car stopped her in Peru Banda locality and threw acid on them. While the attack left Ekta injured with burns on her hand and feet, her son had an escape with only a few drops of acid reaching him. The victim was first taken to the civil hospital, from where, she was later shifted to Christian Medical College and Hospital, where she is under treatment. Sahni said it was owing to the FIR she got registered against the in-laws that Ekta was attacked.

It is not for the first time that the city has witnessed an acid attack case. A little over four months ago, a 19-year-old girl Sukhvinder Kaur and her neighbour 21-year-old Sita were left injured and burnt in an acid attack by a boy named Dharminder. Faces of both the women were burnt in this brutal attack.

In 2007, 40-year-old Lalita and her minor daughter Shakunti Kumari had fallen prey to a brutal acid acid attack. In 2006, the city was shocked by the death of a 16-year-old girl Sandeep and blinding of another girl Rajwant following an acid attack. Both the victims were factory workers and were friends. "There are socio-cultural factors in addition to certain other factors like stress and psychotic tendencies that make people indulge in such brutal activities like acid attacks. These factors create emotional imbalance, resulting in such tendencies and insensitivity, " said, Sonam, a psychologist.

When contacted on the issue, DSP Paramjeet Singh Pannu said, "We are verifying the facts of the case and would be taking suitable action after the verification."
