New Zealand hope to rattle the Indian batsmen in the five-match ODI series as they included tear-away pacer Adam Milne in the 14-man squad announced on Wednesday.
Team's coach Mile Hesson, who is also a selector, decided to retain 13 of the 14 men who played a 2-2 series draw against the West Indies. The only man to miss out was back-up batsman Colin Munro.
Kane Williamson and Kyle Mills will return fresh after being rested for the two-match Twenty20 series against the West Indies.
Milne, 21, has played just six ODIs so far with a best of 1 for 17. But he is better known to rattle the batsmen with genuine pace, which he showed in the Auckland T20 match on Saturday by clocking 153kmh in a spell of 1 for 15.
Bruce Edgar, general manager for national selection, suggested New Zealand will have to bring out their plan A to beat the world No. 1 side. "We know we'll have to play out of our skins, and out-match them [India] player for player to be competitive against such a powerful side," Edgar said. "But we showed against West Indies that we can play extremely well on our day and are capable of beating any side."
New Zealand are currently ranked eighth in ICC ODI rankings.
India kick off their month-long tour with the first ODI at Napier on January 19, followed by matches at Hamilton (January 22), Auckland (January 25), Hamilton (January 28) and Wellington (January 31).
The two Tests will be played at Auckland and Wellington.
New Zealand ODI squad: Brendon McCullum (captain), Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Luke Ronchi, Jimmy Neesham, Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne.
