Satish Kaushik, Mahesh Bhatt dedicate Lohri to girl child

The state of Haryana is infamous for its skewed sex ratio of 824 females per 1,000 males. In a bid to highlight this and promote the cause, noted actor & director, Satish Kaushik, among others, tried to make a difference with a special Lohri celebration dedicated to all daughters.
The festival of Lohri is celebrated in the northern sates of Punjab & Haryana to mark the end of the winter & the beginning of a new agricultural season. It is also mostly celebrated to mark the birth of a boy child or to pray for a boy child. At the special celebration ‘Lohri Beti Ke Naam’ (Lohri in the name of the daughter) organised in Karnal by the National Integrated Forum of Artistes and Activists (NIFAA), 2,100 girls, all aged below one year and most in prams, came with their mothers.
Satish Kaushik along with Mahesh Bhatt attended the celebrations of the harvest festival to promote the cause for the girl child and the campaign against female foetecide.
Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia said every effort must be made to contain the adverse sex ratio in the state. He regretted that despite efforts in the recent years, the sex ratio of girls in Haryana remained low.
Sarpanches (village heads) from 23 villages in Haryana, where the birth rate of girls was more than that of boys, were specially honoured at the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Satish kaushik said, “The campaign against female foeticide should be a mass movement. I appeal to all the villages & their sarpanches to promote this cause. I will personally look into it in my native village of Dhanaunda which I have adopted. We look forward to honor more sarpanches next year.”
