</td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top"> The first martyrdom in Sikh history and in the Indian continent. The martyrdom day of the 5th Nanak, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji is being commemorated on 2nd May this year.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji (1563-1606) is the 5th Guru of Sikhs and he attained Guruship on 1st September 1581. Before Guru Ji was martyred, he nominated Hargobind Sahib, his son, as the next Guru of the Sikhs.
In his short lifespan of about 43 years, Guru Sahib has done the unmatchable. A few glimpses on what his contribution has been to the Sikh Faith are:
He wrote a huge number of hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib viz. over 2000.
Guru Sahib authored Sukhmani Sahib Baani - The Prayer for Peace.
He compiled and installed for the first time the holy Sikh Book, which at this stage is called Adi Granth.
Completed the construction of Sri Darbar Sahib and Amrit Sarovar.
Guru Sahib developed Amritsar as a Centre of Excellence.
Enhanced the Structure of Sikh Society by introducing the Masand System.
Guru Arjun Dev Ji is the first Sikh Guru to be martyred. He preached the concept of 'Bhana' and taught us to be acceptable to the 'Raza of Waheguru.':
Nanak beseecheth the gift of Nam.
